Hiking the Sabattus Mountain trail
The mountain’s summit is accessible via a moderate 1.4-mile loop trail that takes an average of 45–60 minutes to complete. It is well-maintained and suitable for most families and leashed dogs.

- Difficulty: Moderate, with some exposed roots and ledge.
- Route: A loop trail allows you to ascend and descend on different paths.
- Counter-clockwise: Offers a quicker, steeper ascent for a good cardio workout.
- Clockwise: Provides a more gradual and less strenuous climb.
- Scenery: The trail passes through a mixed-growth forest that transitions to hemlock and pine near the top. The summit has dramatic cliffs on its southwestern side, and several benches are available to enjoy the view.
- Views: From the top, you can see Kezar Lake, Keyes Pond, Pleasant Mountain, and the White Mountains. The area is particularly popular for viewing fall foliage.
- Features: The Greater Lovell Land Trust previously installed markers identifying local flora, though their condition may vary.
Directions and access
- Google Location: Sabattus Mountain trailhead is located off Sabattus Road in Center Lovell.
- From the Center Lovell Inn, head north on Route 5 for about .5 miles.
- Turn right onto Sabattus Road and continue for about 1.5 miles.
- Bear right at the fork to continue onto Sabattus Trail Road.
- Drive for another 0.7 miles. The trailhead and parking area will be on your right.
- The parking area is not plowed in winter and may be inaccessible depending on snow depth.
Important Considerations
Hunting: The parcel is open to hunting during firearms season, and hikers should be aware and take precautions during this time.
Safety: Use caution at the summit, as there are vertical cliffs.
Regulations: Dogs must be kept on a leash. As with all Bureau of Parks and Lands properties, follow the carry-in/carry-out policy.
The reward at the summit is a panoramic view of Kezar Lake, the White Mountains, and rolling hillsides ablaze in autumn colors. On a clear October day, the reds of sugar maples and the golds of birches stretch as far as the eye can see, making it one of the region’s most spectacular yet accessible overlooks.
